The town of Kherson was founded in the 17th century as a Ukrainian settlement (starodávnia, "old town") of the Cossacks. The name means "river town" in Russian.
History
The first mention of the town dates back to 1633, when it was mentioned as one of the administrative centers of the Cossack Hetmanate. During the Polish–Lithuanian–Muscovite War (1654–1667) Kherson served as the base for the Ukrainian units led by Bohdan Khmelnytsky. After the war, Kherson was incorporated into the Russian Empire.
In the 19th century, the town became an important point on the Black Sea trade routes. Later, in the 1880s, the population of Kherson dramatically grew due to the building of the first railway in the south of the Russian Empire. The railway line was constructed by the British company "Cape Fear and Western Railway Co."
